About this place
The care put into the food is evident from the start with the house-made tofu served as an otoshi table starter. When visiting Karashiya in Kawaguchi, a great first order is the okami's daily obanzai laid out along the counter. These simmered dishes and stir-fries feature seasonal vegetables with gentle seasoning, arriving quickly so you can nibble while sipping your first drink.
Charcoal-grilled skewers, cooked slowly until fragrant, are another essential feature of the menu. The assorted skewer platter, featuring classics like negima chicken and scallion alongside creative variations, is seasoned with a deft touch of salt. Cuts such as seseri (neck), bonjiri (tail), and cartilage-studded tsukune meatballs each deliver distinct textures and deep savor. The warm menu continues with piping-hot oden simmered in dashi—including beef tendon and daikon radish—and a deeply comforting homestyle stewed offal dish.
The drinks list is equally thorough, spanning Kirin draft beer, Hoppy, regional sake like Yamagata's Oyama and Dewazakura or Kochi's Suigei, and an extensive selection of authentic shochu. After enjoying robatayaki grilled fish like Atka mackerel or horse mackerel, finishing the evening with grilled onigiri rice balls or comforting ochazuke makes for an ideal close.
The relaxed interior provides cozy counter seats for solo diners as well as tables for groups, opening from 17:00 in the evening. As seats fill up quickly during dinner hours, reserving in advance is recommended.
